Charles Henri Joseph Cordier was ahead of his time.

This, and the rest of his body of work, was completed in the middle of the 18th century. He was practically the only artist interested in African figures during this time. It’s amazing to see it in a museum setting around all these paintings with white porcelain looking figures. It stands out among the crowd.

Check it out if you are ever at the Art Institute of Chicago Museum.
